Day 2 of early voting underway in NYC; nearly 80,000 ballots cast so far

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Election Day is less than two weeks away and the candidates are working hard to get their message out to voters as the clock ticks closer to November 4.

In New York City, all eyes are on the race for mayor as frontrunner and Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa are making campaign appearances and headlines regularly.

Meanwhile, the race for the governor of New Jersey is heating up after a recent poll put Mikie Sherrill ahead of Jack Ciattarelli by five points.

Day 3 of early voting begins in NYC; over 164,000 votes estimated so far

A third day of early voting is now underway, with candidates planning campaign stops and interviews in the last full week before Election Day.

Early voting turnout over the weekend was higher than it has been in the last four years, with over 164,000 voters turning out to cast their ballots according to a Dept. of Elections estimate.

Crystal Cranmore reports.

On Sunday evening, Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani spoke to a crowd of over 10,000 people at Forest Hill Stadium in Queens, focusing on universal childcare. NY Gov. Kathy Hochul, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez were among the Democrats who joined the rally.

Also on Sunday, Republican Curtis Sliwa attended a Halloween festival, spoke at the "City of Yes" press conference and campaigned in Bay Ridge and Washington Heights.

Independent candidate Andrew Cuomo meet with Brooklyn leaders and held a rally at Queens Public Library in Kew Garden Hills after netting an endorsement from New York Daily News earlier Sunday morning.

The New York Daily News has endorsed Andrew Cuomo in the race for New York City mayor.

The news publication's editorial board cited the Independent mayoral candidate's record and experience as reasons for their endorsement on Sunday.
