With 2 weeks to go, where do NJ candidates stand on key issues

New Jersey is one of two states electing a governor this year and political observers say the results could provide clues on how voters feel about the start of President Trump's second term in office.

Trump is central to the race which pits Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a businessman and former assemblyman making his third run for governor, against Democrat Mikie Sherrill, a fourth-term congresswoman and a former Navy helicopter pilot.

New Jersey reporters Anthony Johnson and Toni Yates are covering the race and have more on where the candidates stand on key issues and where the race stands with just two weeks to go.

NYC business leader John Catsimatidis publicly calls on Sliwa to drop out

NY-WABC Radio and Red Apple Media CEO John Catsimatidis publicly urged Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa to exit the 2025 New York City mayoral race, citing concerns that Sliwa's continued candidacy could split the vote and inadvertently help another candidate.

Sliwa, a prominent radio personality who has worked with WABC Radio for decades, is currently on a leave of absence from the station while running for mayor.

"Curtis would make the best mayor of all the candidates... but Curtis has to realize that he should love New York more than anything else," Catsimatidis told host Sid Rosenberg on Monday morning. "It certainly looks like Curtis should pull out right now."

He said that he believes Sliwa could win the next election because people would be proud of him for doing "the right thing for New York City."

"We cannot take a chance on Zohran winning and every common-sense New Yorker feels the same way," Catsimatidis said. "I think Curtis would be a hero if we beat Zohran"

Ciattarelli downplays concerns on future of Gateway Tunnel project; Sherrill responds

Republican candidate for New Jersey governor Jack Ciattarelli downplayed concerns about the future of the Gateway Tunnel project.

During an appearance on Fox News, he claimed President Trump's assertion the project was "terminated" was actually a negotiation tactic related to the government shutdown.

"The project doesn't stop, the Gateway project is managed by the Gateway commission, it has cash, it then seeks reimbursement from the federal government, the shutdown would have to continue for another one or two months before it impacts that project," Ciattarelli said. "The president is playing hardball negotiation and I don't blame him because the Democrats are wrong on this, so I really do not see that Gateway project coming to an end, as governor I'll make sure it continues some way, somehow."

His opponent, Democratic Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill responded on social media and accused Ciattarelli of putting "politics ahead of New Jersey's best interests."

She added, "Donald Trump is making it very clear that the cancellation of Gateway isn't a tactic. He's killing the project permanently simply because his political opponents were in favor of it."
