Search for driver after bicyclist fatally struck on Long Island

LAKE SUCCESS, Long Island (WABC) -- A search is underway for a minivan that struck and killed a bicyclist on Long Island and kept going.

Police say 66-year-old David Schlichting was out for a morning ride and was traveling east on the South Service Road off the Long Island Expressway between exits 33 and 34 near Great Neck High School when he was struck by an older model minivan around 9 a.m.

Schlichting was wearing a helmet was thrown off the bike and struck his head, causing severe head trauma. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

"He was a lovely man, he was a good neighbor," Ruth Goldfarb said.

Friends say it was common for Schlichting to be on his bike, and say he often rode dozens of miles in a day.

The investigation is currently ongoing.
