Long Island sustains minor flooding, wind damage from rain storm

SMITHTOWN (WABC) -- On Long Island, the rain and wind have made getting around difficult.

Minor flooding was reported on the streets of Smithtown and sanitation crews were cutting up downed trees and branches to cart away.

In Stonybrook, at the corner of North Country Road and Beacon Hill Drive, a tree was toppled by the wind. It landed on a car that was slightly damaged. No one was injured.

The heavy rain caused flooding in the area as well. Ninth Street in Lindenhurst was covered by tidal flooding overnight as the rain continued to fall.

Nearby creeks off the Atlantic Ocean overflowed their banks. The flooding should go down as the tide gets lower later Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, on Friday some people took advantage of the high surf to hit the waves.

There were dozens of surfers in the water off Rockaway Beach.

State and federal money has been spent on strengthening shorelines in the Rockaways ever since Superstorm Sandy hit three years ago.
