Suffolk police officer struck by car, opens fire at fleeing vehicle in Medford

MEDFORD, Long Island (WABC) -- Suffolk County police are investigating an incident during which an officer fired shots at a vehicle after the fleeing driver struck an officer and a patrol car.

Authorities say two officers were at 76 Gas Station on Route 112 in Medford just after 1 a.m. when the clerk reported to them an attempted larceny that occurred approximately 30 minutes earlier.

As the officers were leaving the location, the suspect's vehicle returned with three occupants. The officers reportedly approached the vehicle, and while they were speaking to the occupants, the driver fled. After being struck, the officer fired three shots at the vehicle.

The vehicle, a 2014 Dodge Charger, traveled northbound on Route 112 and was located a short time later on Flores Lane in Middle Island.

One occupant fled the scene, while one occupant was questioned and then transported to a hospital for treatment of cuts from glass that was broken when gunfire hit the car.

The man who was driving the vehicle at the time it was located, 43-year-old Sheldon Davis, of Coram, was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

The officer who was struck by the vehicle was transported to a hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The other officer was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
