NORTH AMITYVILLE, N.Y. (WABC) -- Two Suffolk County Police officers rescued a man and his grandson from a house fire in North Amityville Wednesday morning.
First Precinct Police Officers Michael Maio and Adam Quinones were on patrol when they saw smoke coming from the home on Miller Avenue.
The officers alerted a resident, James Brown, 82, who was unaware that the house was on fire and helped him evacuate from the home.
Officer Maio then returned to the home to look for other occupants and located Brown's grandson, Tizia Gibbs, 13, in a rear room of the home.
Due to heavy smoke conditions, Officer Maio was unable to see Gibbs and was forced to use verbal directions to guide the teen to safety.
Officer Maio was treated for smoke inhalation at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. Officer Quinones, Brown and Gibbs were not injured.
Following a preliminary investigation, the cause of the fire appears accidental.
