NEW YORK (WABC) -- A fire forced the evacuation of an Old Navy store in Midtown Manhattan Thursday night.

The fire broke out just before 7 p.m. at the store on 34th Street, between 6th and 7th Avenues.

Witnesses captured the flames inside the Herald Square store within minutes posting the images on social media.

The FDNY says it started in the rear of the store, on the second floor of a four-story building.

Shoppers sprinted out of Old Navy around 7 Thursday evening after smelling smoke and hearing the ringing alarms.

"I was in the dressing room changing and I heard the guys from Old Navy yelling everybody out, everybody out. And then the alarm started running, we were running," said Domenyco Montero, a witness.

"We were in the shoe department on the third floor and smelled the smoke and heard the fire alarm going off and everybody was running out of the door, so we started to run. I had my purse and my kids, but I left the stroller behind," said Samantha David, a shopper.

10-year-old Samia David knew exactly what to do, treating it like a school fire drill, but this time with her mom and 3-year-old sister Sade.

"I didn't really panic. I just kept calm. I followed the instructions. I just made sure my baby sister was in my mom's hands," said Samia David, a witness.

"It was a heavy smoke condition. There were flames coming out of the second floor. Firemen found the fire, put it out, and there was no injuries," said Battalion Chief John Porretto, of the FDNY.

Battalion Chief John Porretto says some 60 firefighters got the blaze under control within 20 minutes, and then allowed shoppers back in the building to get the things they left behind during the panic.

"It was crazy. It was scary. You know in this area, I thought the worse," Montero said.

So far there are no reports of any injures.
