STATEN ISLAND (WABC) -- A pair of Bald Eagles is nesting in Staten Island, according to the New York City Audubon.
Local Staten Island birders confirm that a female eagle appears to be incubating eggs on the South Shore.
The female's companion has been nicknamed Vito.
After an unusual winter, Bald Eagles were spotted in all five boroughs, but none have stayed to breed before now.
The population of eagles is growing. Only one pair of eagles was known to nest in all of New York State in 1960, compared to 173 pairs counted in 2010
The decision for them to stay and breed in New York City is a reminder that wildlife returns when ecosystems are healthy.
