Off-duty postal worker shot by police impersonators in Newark, official says

NEWARK, N.J. (WABC) -- Police are looking for two suspects who shot an off-duty postal officer on Thursday.

The victim was shot near the intersection of 18th and Winans avenues in Newark just before 4 a.m. According to U.S. Postal Inspector Greg Kliemisch, the officer was pulled over by individuals posing as Newark Police officers. There was a scuffle between the suspects and the officer, and the officer was shot.

The postal officer, who was off duty, was taken to University Hospital for treatment of a wound to his hand. He was treated and released.

The two suspects fled in a white Ford Crown Victoria.

No arrests were immediately made.

The officer was assigned to the main office at 2 Federal Square in Newark.

The investigation is ongoing.
