Female Yonkers police officer shot; 2 suspects in custody

YONKERS, New York (WABC) -- A female Yonkers police officer was shot in the face by a suspect in Yonkers on Monday night.

Yonkers police received a 911 call for a suspicious vehicle at Marshall Road and Ridge Drive around 8 p.m. with two men inside.

Sources tell Eyewitness News that the person contacted police after they saw the vehicle sitting there for over an hour with the passenger constantly going in and out of the car.

As two officers approached vehicle, police say one of the men started firing several shots with their handgun which hit one of the officers.

The officers returned fire, there was an exchange of gunfire and one of the suspects was shot.

"We just heard bang, bang, bang, and it just seemed like it was a semiautomatic that just kept going off," said Carmen Feliciano, an eyewitness. "And then we heard all the cops coming, turned out all the lights, and we called 911 and they said that there was an active shooter and to stay indoors. But even after the cops showed up, the shooting, you just continued to hear it."

"Oh boy, a whole bunch of them, a whole bunch of them," a resident said. "After a while you stop counting, you know, and you just make sure none of them is coming past your damn head."

Numerous NYPD and Yonkers police cars arrived at the hospital. In fact, Eyewitness News is told the NYPD shut down streets in the city so they could rush the wounded officer to Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx as quickly as possible.

A police motorcade escorted her there.

She's in serious but stable condition with a bullet wound to her jaw. The officer is said to be alert and able to talk.

"This could have been much worse. Thank God. The officer right now did not sustain a life-threatening injury," said Charles Gardner, Yonkers Police Commissioner. "You know, she's struck, she's in serious but stable condition, but thank God it looks like she's going to be okay."

Two suspects are now under arrest. One is hospitalized in an unknown condition.

Police recovered a handgun at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
