INWOOD, Manhattan (WABC) -- A man is under arrest after he allegedly drove the wrong way down a road and hit several parked cars in Inwood.
Police say they attempted to stop 35-year-old John Maldonado as he drove his Land Rover near Broadway and 173rd Street around 7:30 p.m. Monday. He apparently failed to abide by a "no-turn" sign.
The vehicle fled northbound on Broadway and ended up on Hernshaw Street driving the wrong direction.
Police say Maldonado also reversed into a police vehicle on Hernshaw Street while trying to escape.
The Land Rover crashed into a cab three times, went up onto a sidewalk, almost hitting pedestrians, and then ultimately crashed into several parked cars. Another car drove up the sidewalk to avoid a collision.
Police say Maldonado got out of the Land Rover and ran from the scene, but they caught up to him at Riverside Drive and 177th Street just after 8 p.m.
Maldonado is now facing several charges including: reckless endangerment, second degree forgery, resisting arrest, reckless driving, possession of a controlled substance, and leaving the scene of an accident.
There was also a passenger inside the vehicle, 27-year-old Amber Faison. She was charged with possession of a controlled substance. Apparently there was a crack pipe in the vehicle.
