Police search for suspect who killed man in Hell's Kitchen stabbing

HELL'S KITCHEN, Manhattan (WABC) -- Two men were stabbed, one fatally, outside a Hell's Kitchen shelter early Thursday morning.

The victims, who both appeared to be in their 30s, were found outside Urban Pathways, a nonprofit that helps the homeless, on Ninth Avenue just after 4:45 a.m.

One of the men was stabbed multiple times in the torso and was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital.

The other was stabbed multiple times in the abdomen and is in stable condition.

Surveillance video from outside of a deli nearby showed multiple men near bicycles.

It appeared like there may have been a disagreement over the bikes.

Two men rushed out to confront a man over a bike he grabbed.

A suspect, last seen wearing a blue jacket and blue pants, fled southbound on Ninth Avenue on a bicycle.

No arrests were immediately made and the motive is still under investigation.

Police haven't confirmed if the people involved in the stabbing were experiencing homelessness, but Urban Pathways released a statement saying that it's been committed to change.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic stabbing that occurred outside one of our Urban Pathways facilities . Our hearts are with the individuals impacted, their loved ones, and all those shaken by this act of violence.

This incident is a painful reminder of the complex challenges facing the communities we serve-individuals navigating homelessness, trauma, mental health struggles, and systemic inequities every day. While moments like this are difficult, they reinforce the urgency of our mission.

At Urban Pathways, we remain committed to leading with care, compassion, and dignity-ensuring that every person who walks through our doors is met with support, safety, and humanity. Violence is never the answer, but understanding and addressing its root causes must be.

We are working closely with city partners and authorities as the investigation continues, and we will continue to show up for our community with unwavering compassion."
