NEWBURGH, New York (WABC) -- An investigation is underway after a source says an 11-year-old apparently shot and killed himself while playing with his older brother's gun on Thursday morning.
It happened at a home on North Miller Street just after 8:15 a.m.
Sources say the child was playing with the gun when it went off.
The mother confronted the older child about having a gun and he ran off, sources say. He was later found.
Some schools in the area were placed on lockout while police responded to the area.
A parent in the community said the neighborhood is devastated.
"My kids played with him, he stayed at my house, I know him, it's sad, really sad," Harold Brown said. "He's got two other brothers, his mom, I know they are really going through it right now. A lot of people in the community are as well."
Brown said the victim played basketball with his children and they jumped on the trampoline together.
"He did everything that an 11-year-old truthfully would be doing," Brown said.
Few other details were released.
