5 in custody after deadly drive-by shooting in front of Bronx deli

ALLERTON, Bronx (WABC) -- Five people were shot, one of them fatally, in the latest rash of violence in the Bronx.

Police say they have five people of interest in custody including a 24-year-old man who was seriously injured in a crash at Arnow and Hone avenues, just a few blocks away from where the shooting took place.

The Honda he was in is believed to be involved in a drive-by shooting on Allerton Avenue around 7:30 Monday evening.

The street was blanketed with paper cups police used to mark evidence.

Authorities say someone in a car opened fire on group of people outside a deli, killing 25-year-old Jamari Henry.

Two other men, ages 25 and 21, were shot in their arms.

Two other 27-year-old men suffered bullet wounds in their legs.

They were all taken to the hospital in stable condition.

"When you hear gunshots you don't stand to see where they coming from or who is shooting, everybody just runs," said an eyewitness named Edward.

After the shooting occurred, the Honda crashed into a home at the intersection of Arnow and Hone avenues.

"There had to be about 15, 20 cops, you know, with the all that guns drawn when one the cop that was standing in front of this house said, 'you can't come out, don't come out, don't come out,'" said a witness named Cassandra.

Witnesses say the front-seat passenger was ejected, and the other three men in the car, wearing all black and face masks, initially would not get out of the car.

The person of interest injured in the crash was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Three guns were recovered. The shooting is preliminarily believed to be gang-related, and detectives are looking at drugs as a possible motive.

The gunfire was in front of a storefront that had been raided for illegal marijuana sales at least three times, including in April and before that in September of 2023.

During the most recent search, cannabis, colorful packaging and equipment were recovered from inside of the store, as well as a handgun.
