NEW YORK (WABC) -- The holidays are known for being holly and jolly and for spending time with those we love.
But unfortunately, many of us have fallen on hard times, and this time of year might not feel as bright.
That's why on Giving Tuesday it's important to share a little bit of that cheer with others.
'Tis the season! It is a great reminder to give back to those in need, whether it's money, donating to drives, or just volunteering.
WABC-TV has partnered with a lot of great charities, but one in particular, 7 On Your Side's Nina Pineda has had the pleasure of serving on their board, is the Women's Rights and Information Center in Englewood, New Jersey.
Their mission is to provide people with the resources to live their lives with hope, security, and dignity.
Every year they host the Mary Jane Sisca Holiday Gift Drive, where they take donations to give to parents so they can give their own children a gift on Christmas.
With so many charities out there, how do you know your money is going to the right place?
Unfortunately, scammers are not above stealing from charities. First, donating to a local organization is a safe bet.
Because you know exactly where your money or time is going. For example, Be Kind, another local NJ organization, gives out backpacks full of supplies to the homeless.
But if there are other causes that speak to you nationwide, another great site is Charity Navigator, which can help search and vet charities for you so you can donate with an added level of security.
If you see any of these red flags, you want to run the other way:
