CONNECTICUT (WABC) -- Connecticut is the only state in the Tri-State area still offering a statewide sales tax-free week, after New York ended its program and New Jersey later followed.

From Sunday through Saturday, Aug. 16, qualifying purchases of clothing, backpacks and footwear are exempt from Connecticut's 6.35% sales tax.

The exemption applies to items priced individually at less than $300 and covers purchases made both in stores and online.

Some items are not eligible for the tax exemption. Excluded products include specific athletic gear; jewelry; handbags; luggage; umbrellas; wallets; watches; and electronic devices such as laptops, tablets, calculators and cell phones.

The weeklong exemption gives shoppers a temporary break from Connecticut's sales tax on qualifying apparel and footwear purchases before the program ends Saturday.
