Woman injured jumping from 3rd floor during 3-alarm Elizabeth fire
ELIZABETH, New Jersey (WABC) -- A woman was injured after jumping from a third-floor window to escape a fast-moving three-alarm fire that tore through a multi-family home in Elizabeth on Sunday morning, officials said.
Firefighters responding to the blaze on Jefferson Avenue found flames extending from the first floor and running along the rear of the building, with reports of people trapped inside.
The 50-year-old woman was found in a rear driveway after jumping from the building and was taken to University Hospital with burns and possible traumatic injuries. Officials later said she suffered a broken bone and was transferred to St. Barnabas Hospital for further treatment.
The fire broke out around 7:30 a.m. at a large multi-family residence at 470 Jefferson Ave. The intensity of the blaze also caused exterior damage to a neighboring multi-family home.
Fire officials said at least seven residents are expected to be displaced, though that number could increase as authorities continue contacting occupants.
More than a dozen fire units and chiefs responded as the blaze escalated to a third alarm. The fire is under control and remains under investigation.
