The family of an 18-year-old who was killed in an apartment fire caused by a lithium-ion battery is sharing his story in hopes of preventing similar tragedies.
Several residents had to be rescued, but it wasn't until hours after fire started that one person was discovered dead inside the building.
The fire began yesterday afternoon, and it caused extensive damaged to the apartment complex.
The fire was reported at 10:15 p.m. on the 17th floor of a 21-story residential building at 212 E. Broadway, between Jefferson and Clinton streets.
The fire started in a first-floor apartment of a building on 165th Street just before 4 a.m.
Fire officials said the blaze started on the building's second floor before spreading to the third floor.
