5 firefighters injured battling Lower East Side high-rise fire

MANHATTAN (WABC) -- Five firefighters were injured while battling a fire at a high-rise apartment building on the Lower East Side late Friday night, according to the FDNY.

The fire was reported at 10:15 p.m. on the 17th floor of a 21-story residential building at 212 E. Broadway, between Jefferson and Clinton streets.

The FDNY said 38 units and 120 fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene.

Four firefighters were taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital with minor, non-life-threatening injuries. A fifth firefighter was evaluated at the scene and refused medical attention.

The fire was brought under control at 11:59 p.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

There was no immediate word on whether any residents were injured or displaced.
