Bodies of mother and son found in Downtown Brooklyn apartment

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN (WABC) -- An 80-year-old mother and her 52-year-old son were discovered dead inside a Downtown Brooklyn apartment.

Residents called reporting a foul odor in the Jay Street apartment just before 1 p.m. Wednesday.

"Yesterday we found out that she was dead because my son went to the doorman and said, the smell is terrible abomination," said the victim's neighbor Mireyda Reyes.

Both were pronounced dead on the scene and appeared to be dead for some time.

The mother had died first and was in an advanced stage of decomposition.

Neither had any trauma and there is no criminality suspected in their deaths, but now neighbors want to know when and how their neighbors died.

"I went to the office and I complained, I said, 'You have to come and check it out because there's something not right there,' And that was about five months ago," Reyes said.

Reyes said her next-door neighbor, who has not yet been identified by police, lived in the building for roughly 25 years and used to work for a bank and would at times hear her playing the piano through the walls.

"She used to run for her, her health, and then she had a stroke and that's what kept her in," Reyes said. "But he wouldn't even bring her around in a wheelchair or anything. She was just in there all the time."

Reyes said she hasn't actually seen her neighbor for 10 years.

The woman's son lived in a different apartment complex and sources say, like clockwork, he would pay fees for both units every month for years, but he hasn't been seen since September.

"All I know is her son...he was the only one taking care of her, but he wouldn't let me go in and see her," Reyes said. "He wouldn't let me go in."
