Mindly Kaling draws inspiration from her life in Hulu's 'Not Suitable for Work'

NEW YORK (WABC) -- What happens when you mix New York City chaos, post-grad uncertainty, messy friendships, nonstop ambition, and just enough questionable decision-making to keep things interesting? According to Mindy Kaling, you get "Not Suitable for Work." It's the newest comedy already giving major "next-generation 'Friends'" energy.

The series follows five 20-somethings navigating adulthood in Manhattan: roommates Abby and AJ, plus the boys across the hall: Kel, Davis, and Josh. Think awkward dating, career confusion, emotional support group chats, and the kind of neighbors who are technically part of your apartment at this point.

And yes, the cast knows exactly the vibe they're serving.

Avantika Vandanapu describes Abby as an aspiring fashion stylist working closely with glamorous clients while trying to figure out "which lines she should and shouldn't be crossing." Across from her is Ella Hunt's AJ, a Red Sox-loving Boston transplant attempting to survive New York City under the guidance of her cooler, more city-savvy best friend.

Then there's Josh, played by Jack Martin, the lovable nepo baby "trying his best to be a good guy." Sometimes succeeding. Sometimes...not. Even the cast admits viewers may go back and forth on him.

Nicholas Duvernay's Kel is the med-school "dad" of the friend group, while Will Angus says Davis approaches life at "100 percent maximum capacity," making him the human espresso shot of the series.

The show is inspired by Kaling's own post-grad years after moving from Boston to New York, a time she says built "so much character." And longtime fans should keep their eyes open because the easter eggs are everywhere.

Kaling even teased references inspired by people in her real life, including a nod to longtime friend BJ Novak. One scene was filmed at The Mulberry, a bar Novak actually co-owns.

With nostalgic ensemble-comedy chemistry, modern twenty-something panic, and enough NYC energy to make you want to romanticize your next subway ride, "Not Suitable for Work" looks ready to become the comfort-chaos comedy of 2026.

New episodes drop Tuesdays on Hulu and Disney+. Disney is the parent company of this station.
