A 39-year-old man was taken into police custody

PARK HILL, Staten Island (WABC) -- A baby girl was rushed to the hospital after police say her uncle threw the child down a garbage chute on Staten Island.
The incident happened around 3:15 p.m. at 195 Steuben St. in the Park Hill section after a 911 call was received for an emotionally disturbed person at the location.
Police say a 39-year-old man threw his niece, a 1-year-old girl, down a trash chute from the third floor to the first floor.
The baby was rushed to Staten Island University Hospital North in stable condition with minor scratches to her torso.
Milton Franklin lives on the same floor and says he came home to see the mother and crying baby go into the ambulance.
"I'm hurt. I'm just going to pray that God wraps his arms around his family and that they get through the situation," Franklin said.
The baby's uncle was quickly taken into police custody for questioning.
"That's sad. To put a baby down to the garbage. I mean, mental illness is... you have to be able to do something like that. Nobody in their right state of mind would do something like that to a child," said resident Keisha Lacey.
The investigation is ongoing.
