Passenger in emotional distress sparks chaotic scene aboard Metro-North train at Grand Central
MIDTOWN (WABC) -- A woman apparently in emotional distress caused delays and a chaotic scene aboard a Metro-North train as it approached Grand Central Terminal on Wednesday morning.
The 7:12 a.m. train from New Canaan was seconds away from reaching its platform at Grand Central when the emergency cord was activated. Instead of pulling into the station, the train came to a stop before reaching the platform.
While the train remained stopped, several passengers exited through at least two emergency windows and began walking along the tracks toward the platform. Officials said Metropolitan Transportation Authority employees did not open the train's doors, and passengers were not instructed to leave the train.
MTA police officers, who are stationed at Grand Central, quickly responded and escorted about 60 commuters who had exited the train safely to the platform. All of the passengers were accounted for, officials said. Four people were being evaluated as a precaution.
The passenger who was reportedly in emotional distress was also being evaluated and was expected to be transported to a hospital.
Officials said no weapon was recovered and investigators do not believe a crime was committed.
Metro-North service resumed following the incident, with the exception of Track 110, where the train remained as the investigation continued.
