Guilty verdicts in toddler's fentanyl death at Bronx daycare

BRONX, New York (WABC) -- A woman who ran a Bronx daycare where a 1-year-old died of fentanyl poisoning was convicted Friday, along with her husband, of second-degree murder.

Grei Mendez and her husband, Felix Herrera Garcia, ran an illegal narcotics operation out of the El Divino Nino daycare on Morris Avenue where they hid fentanyl beneath a trapdoor in the floor where the children took naps.

A 22-month-old boy, Nicholas Domenici, died of fentanyl exposure. Three other children were sickened in September 2023.

"Nothing we can do will bring back Nicholas. His death has torn a hole in the hearts of his mother, father and siblings, and saddened the entire Bronx community," Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said. "I hope that these convictions will give the family a sense of justice and help them to gain peace and closure."

Mendez and Garcia were previously convicted of federal charges.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
