The shooter has been identified and charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting eight people in Coney Island on the night of July 4th.

CONEY ISLAND, Brooklyn (WABC) -- Police have arrested and charged a man in the shooting of eight people in Coney Island the night of July 4th.

The NYPD charged 44-year-old Robert Smith on Wednesday with multiple counts of attempted murder.

The shooting happened on Surf Avenue and West 30th Street around 10:35 p.m. on Saturday.

Eight people were shot, including four children.

The victims were at a July 4th family barbecue when they came under attack.

There are no details yet on a motive, or how the police linked Smith to the crime.
