UNION, New Jersey (WABC) -- A pedestrian was fatally struck on Route 495 in New Jersey early Wednesday morning, causing a traffic backup at the Lincoln Tunnel.
It happened on the westbound side at Kennedy Boulevard in Union City.
The Port Authority said that a man was walking along 495 westbound when he was hit by a vehicle.
The traffic coming away from the Lincoln Tunnel could be seen getting diverted onto local streets.
Inbound to New York City, traffic was backed up all the way on Route 3 by the Meadowlands due to rubbernecking.
Delays were further exacerbated due to the closure of the express bus lane, mixing buses in with the rest of traffic.
As of 10:30 a.m., delays inbound were about 30 minutes. NJ Transit bus tickets and passes were being cross-honored by NJ Transit rail and PATH.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
