FDNY EMS captain accused of molesting boys waives extradition
STATEN ISLAND (WABC) -- A New York City EMS captain accused of sexually assaulting children in Los Angeles appeared in court on Staten Island Monday.
Wilburt Riera was arrested by FBI agents last week at his station house on Staten Island.
He has worked for the FDNY for more than two decades, but for the last two weeks he served as the EMS captain for Battalion 23.
Riera waived extradition, and his case was adjourned until October 9.
Riera is charged with six felony counts of lewd act on a child under 14 for allegedly sexually molesting two young boys while he was in Los Angeles between September 12 and 14, the LA County District Attorney's Office announced.
Prosecutors will ask that his bail be set at $2.6 million when he is extradited.
If convicted, he faces up to life in state prison.
The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the case.
In the meantime, Riera has been suspended by the department for 30 days without pay.
No one answered the door at Riera's home in Bay Shore on Long Island, and neighbors had no apparent interest in speaking to reporters.
In the past, Riera has volunteered at the Brentwood Legion Ambulance Corp, serving as a past president.
