Six firefighters hurt, dozens displaced amid massive multi-building fire in Newark

NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- Six firefighters were hurt while battling a massive blaze that engulfed multiple buildings in the Ironbound section of Newark, New Jersey on Friday night.

Emergency crews raced to the scene of a multi-building fire at 196 Jefferson Street just before 10:30 p.m.

Flames spread to buildings at 194, 192, 190, and 188 Jefferson Street.

Firefighters got the fire under control at 3:24 a.m.

Six firefighters were hurt and were transported to University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, according to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda.

Building residents all made it out safely, but 59 people have now been displaced from their homes.

The Newark Office of Emergency Management and American Red Cross are assisting residents with relocation.

American Red Cross volunteers provided 28 people in nine families with Red Cross emergency financial assistance for temporary lodging, food, clothing, and other immediate needs, a spokesperson said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
