Funeral held for NYPD officer who died in Kuwait during Iran war
BROOKLYN (WABC) -- Friends and family gathered in Brooklyn on Friday morning for the funeral of Major Sorffly Davius.
He died in Kuwait earlier this month during the war with Iran.
Officials say Major Davius' death was caused by a medical emergency that was not combat-related.
The 46-year-old lived in Rockland County but was an NYPD and U.S. Army National Guard officer.
Major Davius was eulogized by the captain in the 42nd Infantry Division who escorted him home to the United States.
He remembered his mentor, who became a friend.
"He was a remarkable leader because he didn't lead from a position of title, he invested in people, cared about their growth, their success and the kind of leaders they were becoming," Capt. Christopher Schwenk said. "He led with purpose, with selflessness and with a steady example that made others want to rise to his standards."
Gov. Kathy Hochul directed that flags fly at half-staff Friday in Davius' honor.
He is survived by his wife and six children.
