Giant Christmas ornament slams into cars during high winds

STAMFORD, Connecticut (WABC) -- A giant Christmas decoration meant to spread holiday cheer is now causing major headaches in Connecticut.

Strong winds got hold of an oversized ornament and sent it crashing into cars in Stamford's Harbor Point neighborhood.

The owners of the damaged cars want the company responsible for the runaway decoration to cover the cost of repairs.

"I suddenly saw this gigantic ornament get loose and I'm like that giant ornament is about to hit my car," Alix Abbamonte said.

The giant metal ornament is so big that it has seating inside of it.

Video shows the ornament rock, then it tipped over then the wind took it from there.

Abbamonte was with a friend and two dogs when the ornament smashed right into her Honda. There was nowhere to go except to just brace for impact.

The ornament kept going and hit at least one other car.

Abbamonte took a video of the damage that left the side of her car dented and scratched.

"It looks like a gingerbread man threw up on it," Abbamonte said.

She said the developer BLT, which owns and operates the neighborhood, apologized and said they will pay for the damage and a rental car.

Crews were spotted securing the ornament to make sure there isn't a repeat performance.
