MIDTOWN EAST, Manhattan (WABC) -- There was a show of solidarity and strength on Friday night at Central Synagogue to counter last week's violent disruption during Shabbat services.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch led prayers and stood next to the rabbi as he read from the Torah.
Tisch also addressed the room, which was packed.
"As a proud Jew and lifelong member of this congregation, you have my word that I stand with you in these uncertain and precarious times," Tisch said.
Interfaith leaders, including Cardinal Timothy Dolan and Reverend A.R. Bernard of the Christian Cultural Center appeared as a group, speaking to the crowd and joining in song.
Dolan spoke about the experience afterwards.
"There's this sense of amity and respect and neighborliness and to see that every religion was represented tonight in just solidarity and accompaniment with this cheerful community. I'm thrilled," he said.
