EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants lost a quarterback for the third time in four games after Tommy DeVito left Sunday's 35-14 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the first half with a concussion.
The Giants have now played Daniel Jones, DeVito, Drew Lock and Tim Boyleover the past five games, all losses.
Boyle came in to replace DeVito on Sunday with Lock available only as the emergency third-string option. Boyle went 12-of-24 for 123 yards with a touchdown pass and interception. His 23-yard connection with rookie Malik Nabers was the Giants' first touchdown pass since Nov. 3, a span of five games.
"It's December football," Boyle said. "And I get that. It's a lot of injuries, unfortunately. But I've been a part of it, so it's not something I'm super foreign to. But it's in the job description of being a quarterback. You've got to be ready to go when your number's called. It's all hands on deck. All three of us are ready to go at that point."
The quarterback carousel contributed to the Giants' ninth straight loss, tying a franchise record on an afternoon in which an airplane flew over MetLife Stadium for the second straight week with a message for ownership.
Directed at owner John Mara, it read: "MR MARA ENOUGH - WE WON'T STOP UNTIL YOU FIRE EVERYONE"
Last week's banner said: "MR MARA ENOUGH - PLZ FIX THIS DUMPSTER FIRE"
The Giants (2-12) went with DeVito as the starter this week because Lock was dealing with heel and left elbow injuries. Lock was in a boot earlier in the week. Coach Brian Daboll didn't know whether he would be able to return on Dec. 22 against the Atlanta Falcons. He thought it was too early to tell, and that the Giants would make a decision on whether to sign another quarterback on Monday after assessing the walking wounded.
DeVito, making his second start this season, will have to clear the concussion protocol in order to be available. He went 10-of-13 for 68 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions before taking several big hits on a touchdown drive late in the first half. Baltimore's Nnamdi Madubuike was called for roughing the passer and DeVito then took a pair of sacks before Devin Singletary ran the ball in for a 3-yard score.
DeVito remained in the game for the remainder of the drive, but on the Giants' next possession, Boyle came in for the final snap of the half. It was announced after halftime that DeVito was ruled out.
"I don't know if it was [on the play with] the [Madubuike] penalty or after that," Daboll said of when the injury occurred. "[DeVito] came off, [I] talked to him a little bit and then right before we were going to go out there in that two-minute drive I went over to him and talked about a particular play. We had a couple timeouts. I kind of saw his eyes and asked the trainer to come over and take a look at him. They took a look at him."
DeVito was an instant sensation last season while winning three consecutive starts as an undrafted free agent rookie. But he came into this season as the third-stringer behind Jones and Lock.
The struggling Giants have since benched and cut Jones, started DeVito, started Lock and are now on to their fourth quarterback of the season with the recently signed Boyle. They're last in the NFL in scoring with 14.9 points per game.
"I think it helps a lot to have continuity at that position," wide receiver Darius Slayton said. "Obviously none of our quarterbacks have tried to get hurt. It's just unfortunate that it has happened. I think Tim came in and played well. I think he let the ball go in the second half, gave us some chances to make some plays. At the end of the day, all you can do is try to adjust as fast as you can on the fly."br/]
