Students at LaGuardia High School are gearing up for annual variety show fundraiser
UPPER WEST SIDE (WABC) -- Next month, a decades-long tradition will continue at LaGuardia High School.
Students are deep into rehearsals on the Upper West Side for the school's annual fundraiser, Rising Stars.
The variety show aims to bring students together for a high-energy celebration of the arts while also raising money for school programs.
It's a crafted variety show that co-directors Rachel Ticotin and Lee Lobenhofer carefully piece together.
"We say we've got this amount of dance, this amount of vocal, this amount of spoken word, this amount of cultural things. We really try to really create an interesting evening of variety but we also work with the acts to polish them," Lobenhofer said.
Roughly 150 acts auditioned but only 30 will perform in the show.
The theme this year is 'Get on Your Feet.'
What's unique is that students get to show a different side of themselves and step outside of their majors to tap into other interests.
Maggie, who is a senior, is an art major but is performing with her brother who is a freshman.
"Its a really irreplaceable community because you have people from all different majors, not only doing what they are here to do at school but what they love to do," she said.
The shows are on February 5, 7, and 8.
"We are telling them to get on their feet and participate in the world, if you see something you love join in, if you see something you do not love, stand up and fight back," Lobenhofer said.
