MANHASSET (WABC) -- A man has been arrested after a police chase on Long Island near the Americana Mall in Manhasset.
The chase started in Port Washington on Wednesday afternoon, and during the chase, an officer fired a shot, but no one was hit, according to sources.
It came to a dramatic end with an arrest outside the Americana Mall.
After a police pursuit, sources say the suspect tried to flee on foot near the Americana Manhasset and was surrounded by officers about 100 feet into a parking lot.
Sources say it began around 12:30 p.m. when a man in a stolen car was stopped by police on Main Street in Port Washington. Sources say the suspect jumped out of that car and into a stolen Mercedes and fled.
The suspect allegedly turned onto a side street and engaged with police and then allegedly drove toward an officer, which is when sources say one shot was fired by police.
According to Nassau County Police, the person allegedly caused several accidents.
"The individual fled to scene and causing multiple vehicle accidents. Which culminated into the accident we see behind here at Americana Mall. That individual was responsible for this accident, multiple accidents, was apprehended, and is in custody. There's one individual. There's currently no threat to the community," NCPD Chief of Department Christopher Ferro said.
The Paul D. Schreiber High School and Carrie Palmer Weber Middle School were briefly on a lockout, for about 15 minutes, which was lifted at 1 p.m.
Police have not released the identity of the suspect.
