Luxury tower catching heat for blocking view of Empire State Building

NOMAD, Manhattan (WABC) -- A new luxury residential tower in Manhattan is catching heat from some people in the neighborhood who say it's blocking their view of the iconic Empire State Building.

The new tower at 262 Fifth Ave. is making people as angry as bees in a jar.

A woman named Joyce called luxury building, "obscene," in addition to some other choice words.

The new tower sits at the corner of 29th Street, but many in Nomad are not rolling out the welcome mat.

On social media, folks are venting about what some call an "urban mistake," a symbol of wealth inequality where condos top out at $18 million.

On the flip side, many point out, this is a city where skyscrapers are being built all the time, but critics insist more thought must go into the design.

Joyce had a near miss with another city landmark.

"My nightlight is the Chrysler Building, and they were building across the street from me and I'm watching this and I finally found out, they stopped before it blocked it," she said.

Showings are expected to begin soon, with construction wrapping up some time in December.

The developer, Five Points, had no comment.
