NEW YORK (WABC) -- Speed cameras have been activated in work zones at MTA bridges and tunnels across New York City as officials aim to curb dangerous driving and better protect construction crews.

Drivers say speeding through work areas is a common sight.

"I see it every morning. 4:30 in the morning - they're flying," one commuter said.

The MTA's enforcement program places speed cameras in active work zones at the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge, Henry Hudson Bridge, Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge, Queens Midtown Tunnel, Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, Throgs Neck Bridge and Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

Ride-share driver Shahidul said the dangers are clear.

"A lot of construction zones in this city. So in the city construction zones - must be careful because people are working," he said.

According to the MTA, nearly 900 people were killed and 40,000 were injured in work zones nationwide in 2023.

Drivers caught traveling more than 10 mph over the posted speed limit will receive a warning for a first offense. After that, fines increase to $50 for a first violation, $75 for a second violation within 18 months and $100 for each subsequent offense.

One driver suggested the penalties should go even further.

"I personally like the way they do it in Finland where they bill you by your income. The more money you make, the higher your fee is," he said.

The MTA said each active work zone includes an unmarked vehicle equipped with radar and camera technology. Signs are also posted to alert drivers that automated enforcement is in use.

Some motorists remain skeptical.

"I think it's just a money grab, to be honest. I don't think it's going to make anyone slow down," said Jeremiah, a driver.

The MTA noted that violations are treated as non-moving offenses, meaning they do not appear on driving records or get reported to insurance companies.
