NEW JERSEY (WABC) -- E-bike registration appointments are now open in New Jersey.
Starting on July 19th, all E-bikes must be registered with the state's motor vehicle commission.
It's one of many changes to the state's E-bike laws.
The new law also requires riders to wear helmets.
Riders must also be 15 years or older, and have an E-bike or a driver's license.
And all motorized bikes must have insurance coverage.
Several riders didn't know these changes were happening.
"Some people might disagree because it's like difficult to get a license," one rider said.
The state decided to make changes after complaints and tragedies began piling up.
After July 19, E-bike riders in violation will face fines.
One rider said he hopes the changes will make riding safer.
"I think it's fine because it's going to be safer for students who have to use e-bikes to go to school," he said.
The MVC has now begun offering E-bike registration appointments. 570 were made so far across the state including licenses, insurance and helmets.
Some are concerned that the timeline to obtain the license and insurance is a bit short notice for people.
"We're giving people less than a month. It's going to be tough for people to get everything in place by July 19th," one employee said.
Teenagers who are 15 or 16 will be required to have a motorized bike license.
Those 17 and older will have to have a standard driver's license.
There is a grace period to get this all done, which is until January 19th of next year.
