NYPD recruit reunites with detective who saved his life

NEW YORK (WABC) -- A long-awaited embrace happened during an unexpected reunion.

"I've got goosebumps. He's the reason why I'm here," Officer Christian Leon said.

Officer Leon was formally welcomed into the NYPD at Gun and Shield Day by the officer who inspired him to join the force.

Detective James Fares said, "I was there the night of your accident."

Detective Fares and Leon met for the first time since their paths crossed during a fiery crash on the Grand Central Parkway on Nov. 18, 2021.

During an interview with reporters, Leon thought he was talking about his journey through the Police Academy. He told us about the moment his life changed course.

Leon said an officer "assisted me out of the car, which was about to burn and blow up. He called the ambulance and left without me getting to say thank you. I appreciate the opportunity to thank the person who saved my life. If you ever see this video, I appreciate you."

Little did he know, the man he credited with saving him would be pinning on his badge at the Police Academy in College Point.

Fares was off duty at the time of the rescue.

"When I saw the smoke, I was like, 'I've got to help this guy,'" Fares said. "So, we pulled up in front of his car, got out and I grabbed him."

"I wasn't able to get his badge or his number," Leon said. "All I know is he identified himself as a police officer."

The NYPD learned of Leon's inspiration to become an officer during the application process and tracked down his mystery angel.

"You go through so many different incidents on this job, and sometimes something great like this comes out of it," Fares said.

The first time the two men met, Leon was on a path toward nursing school. Now he's hoping to save lives as one of New York's Finest.

"That's what I want to provide to the public," Leon said. "I want to serve and protect."

Side by side with his protector.

"This brotherhood will always be there for you," Fares said.
