NEW YORK (WABC) -- New York drivers who have racked up 16 or more speed camera violations in a year will now need to install a speed-limiting device in their car.
On Wednesday, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation targeting drivers with numerous infractions.
"We have to protect people and if someone is so flagrantly violating the laws that there's a callous disregard of human life-that's the only way I can describe it-there have to be consequences have to be," Hochul said.
New York's "Super Speeder Crackdown" will cover violations at school zone cameras and red light cameras. Any driver with 16 or more violations in 12 months will be required to install so-called Intelligent Speed Limiter technology.
It's a system that actually prevents a vehicle from speeding. A device is wired into the car's onboard computer and interfaces with GPS tracking to restrict the car's maximum speed to the posted speed limit.
"If you don't install it after 45 days, you lose your registration and you should not be on the roads if you don't care about whether or not you're going to kill somebody," Hochul said.
New York now joins Washington State, Washington, DC and Virginia with similar laws.
Four years ago, devices were installed in 50 city vehicles as part of a pilot program.
Drivers told Eyewitness News that they applauded the new law.
"I think it's a good idea, I worked in a level one trauma unit, and I've seen what tolls speeding can take, so I'm for it," said driver Annie Jankowski.
