2.4 magnitude earthquake shakes New Jersey, USGS says
WHITEHOUSE STATION, New Jersey (WABC) -- A minor earthquake was reported in New Jersey on Friday afternoon.
The 2.4-magnitude earthquake was reported near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, in Hunterdon County.
Few other details were known.
The USGS does not consider earthquakes at 3.0 and below to be very dangerous or damaging.
New Jersey has seen a number of earthquakes in the past two years, beginning with a 4.8 centered in northern New Jersey in April 2024 that rattled the area with reports of at least 10 aftershocks.
Last August, the USGS reported a magnitude 2.7 earthquake northwest of the city near Hillsdale, New Jersey.
It came days after a small earthquake could be felt across the region. That event had a magnitude of 3.0 and hit in the New Jersey suburb of Hasbrouck Heights.
Columbia University professor Dr. James Davis told Eyewitness News back in August:
"It's not that rare and one thing that we do have that's quite different than out West is our crust is very old, so we feel earthquakes more intensely and from farther away for a given size," Davis said. "So if they are comparing to a magnitude 4 that they get or a magnitude 3, there tends to be more shaking here for the same amount of magnitude, and it's felt much more widely."
