No heat? Here's what to do in New York City amid the deep freeze

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Temperatures remains below freezing in New York City and there are several more days of the frigid air ahead.

New York City is in heat season, and that means if it is below 55 degrees outside, the temperature inside your apartment must be at least 68 degrees during the day, and at night it must be 62 degrees.

If you have problems with your heat, the city says to first contact your landlord.

If they don't fix it, you can file a complaint with 311.

If you are having issues with your heat, keep a heat log, record inside and outside temperatures, take photos of the thermostat and save a copy of the complaint.

Steps to keep your home warmer

There are some easy steps to take to help keep your home warmer.

Take a lit match and hold it up around windows and doors. When it flickers or blows out, seal that area.

You can download a thermal camera app on your phone and make sure to check your insulation. There are several inexpensive fixes to seal windows and doors.

Next, be sure to check your pipes. Turn off water and drains and clean your your gutters.

Also check your roof. Snow on the roof means your home is well insulated and heat is not escaping.

Close your fireplace flue and when it comes to your thermostat, experts say to set it at 68 degrees.

Officials also caution against leaving space heaters or electric blankets unattended. Never use stoves, ovens, kerosene heaters or grills to heat your home.
