New York City icon Carnegie Deli reopening in Midtown 10 years after closing
MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- It's official! The Carnegie Deli is reopening next week after the iconic restaurant teased its return on social media last month -- 10 years after closing.
The restaurant will reopen Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 834 Seventh Avenue -- the former home of the Stage Deli, its onetime rival in the pastrami wars.
Everything will be back, including the menu of corned beef, pastrami and knishes, the cheesecake and classic Wall of Fame filled with celebrity photographs. The waiters will also be back, and of course, it will be walk-in only -- no reservations.
The 110 seats will be carefully restored to capture the original Carnegie Deli experience, complete with its signature illuminated sign and wood-paneled walls.
Sarri Harper, whose grandfather Milton Parker bought the Carnegie Deli in 1976, is behind the reopening.
Carnegie Deli and Stage Deli both opened in 1937 and were bitter rivals back in the day.
While the Carnegie Deli closed in 2016, the Stage Deli became the Roxy Delicatessen.
