BAYSIDE, Queens (WABC) -- Police in Bayside are searching for two suspects who they say stabbed an off-duty officer early Wednesday morning on Bell Boulevard.
Authorities said the 30-year-old officer was confronted by the pair just minutes before 1 a.m. Wednesday, while standing outside local businesses with a friend. Investigators are working to determine what led to the encounter.
Police said there was a verbal dispute between the suspects and the off-duty officer before he was stabbed in the right hand. The officer was taken to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition Wednesday morning. His friend was not injured.
Detectives continued gathering information at the scene as they worked to answer several questions, including the whereabouts of the suspects. A neighbor said they were stunned the stabbing happened in their community.
Police said the suspects fled north on Bell Boulevard on a bicycle. Officers have kept the area secured, including inside a nearby market where cameras are positioned overhead.
Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
