NJ police launch coordinated search for car vandal suspect

NEW JERSEY (WABC) -- Police now say more than 80 vehicles were damaged in a wild vandalism spree across Middlesex and Union counties.

Vehicles in Cranford, Linden and Rahway had their windows smashed by bricks or pavers.

Police are working together to find a man who was seen on surveillance video throwing the pavers onto car windows.

A new window is lowered onto Anita Kornagay's car on Tuesday afternoon after someone threw a heavy stone paver onto her windshield, shattering it.

Kornagay is one of 11 whose vehicles were vandalized at the Rosegate Heritage Village 55-plus community on East Hazelwood Avenue in Rahway.

"I gotta pay, what? 370. And that's a lot of money that I didn't have, you know. So why would you come to the seniors' building? We don't have that kind of money, you know," Kornagay said.

Her neighbor, Alma Small, also one of more than 80 victims of this string of vandalism across Union and Middlesex Counties between 1am and 4am Monday.

"It made me angry. I was angry about it, you know, because it's. It's not right. I mean, why what's the purpose of it? You know, making people spend money that they don't have," Small said.

Police shared surveillance images of a man and a dark grey Nissan Rogue, which they say he drove around carrying the massive grey stone pavers an d tossed onto random cars.

Now, multiple towns, including Woodbridge, Edison and Hillside, are working together to find the suspect.

Linden Police say they are investigating more than two dozen vehicles damaged and Cranford looking into 8 instances.

"It's a violent act. And while property was damaged, it's still an act of violence to that property, and that's unacceptable. And people should rest their heads on their pillow every night, not worrying about their neighborhood being disturbed by someone who wanted to create harm," Cranford Police Chief Matthew Nazzaro said.
