ST. ALBANS, Queens (WABC) -- An 18-year-old is now a person of interest in the shooting death of 15-year-old Jaden Pierre last week in Queens.
Police are searching for 18-year-old Zahir Davis after Pierre was shot and killed last Thursday in Roy Wilkins Park in St. Albans.
Officials say Davis is from Jamaica, and detectives believe he may have fled the country.
They say he is a reputed gang member, and believe the shooting stemmed from previous fights between him and Pierre.
After reviewing cell phone video, detectives believe the suspect may have been attempting to pistol whip Pierre during an ongoing fight, but the gun went off.
Police say the two came together at a water and gel gun fight organized by Pierre and promoted on social media. These "takeovers" of parks and public spaces are becoming an increasing concern for the NYPD, as they also attract a gang element.
Attorney General Letitia James first revealed at a vigil for Pierre Monday night that detectives had identified the gunman and knew where he was.
