Flight from Newark diverts to Dulles after passenger tries to open door

NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- A United Airlines flight traveling from Newark Liberty International Airport to Guatemala City diverted to Dulles Airport in Virginia on Thursday evening due to an unruly passenger.

According to Air Traffic Control recordings, the passenger tried to open the door mid-flight and assaulted another passenger.

The passenger allegedly tried to open the plane door of United Flight 1551 at roughly 36,000 feet, according to the pilot on the recording.

A total of 145 passengers and six crew members were onboard at the time.

United says no injuries were reported and the flight landed safely before it was met by law enforcement to address the unruly passenger.

The airline also added that passengers were provided accommodations overnight and a replacement flight departed Friday morning.

It is not yet clear if the passenger is facing any charges.
