NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- The U.S. may have been eliminated from the World Cup, but the international soccer tournament has left a lasting impact in our area.

A public art installation has 23 massive soccer balls on display across New York City and New Jersey.

In a few months, some fans can take the sculptures home for themselves.

One Brooklyn-based artist, Wyatt Kahn, wanted to take part in Art of the Game.

Other artists designed and created large-scale pieces that sit all over the five boroughs and across the Hudson in parts of New Jersey.

It's a way to celebrate the World Cup playing out in our area.

The 23 sculptures are a nod to the sport's 23 tournaments.

The project is the brainchild of Jersey City-based non-profit ARTS 14C.

No two are alike and all have 32 panels and are made of aluminum and stainless steel

Wyatt's work is partly inspired by the notion of front gates of homes all over the world.

Everyone hopes this project creates a lasting bridge between the arts and sports.

"The art world for a very long time has been very insular and over the last decade, there have been more attempts to connect it to other things whether it's fashion or sport or music and I think that's where the fire is and It's vey exciting," Kahn said.

The sculptures will be in place through September 7th.

12 will then find permanent homes in the city and in New Jersey. The rest will be sold privately and at auction.
