RIVERHEAD (WABC) -- A car was pushed onto train tracks and struck by a Long Island Rail Road train following a fender bender on Long Island Thursday.
The accident happened at the Mill Road train crossing in Riverhead just before 2 p.m.
Law enforcement sources tell Eyewitness News that one car was stopped before the gate, waiting for the train to cross, when it was rear-ended by another vehicle and pushed up onto the tracks.
The driver of the car was able to get out of the vehicle before the train struck, but authorities say he or she was then hit by the car after it was struck by the train.
The driver of the vehicle that rear-ended the car was also injured.
Both drivers were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, one via medevac, with injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.
The MTA says there were five occupants in the two vehicles, but only the two were injured.
The train was running on the Ronkonkoma Line.
The MTA says the 12:58 p.m. train from Greenport due in Ronkonkoma at 2:22 p.m. was delayed extensively and that buses were brought in so that passengers could complete the trip. The 2:45 p.m. train from Ronkonkoma due in Riverhead at 3:30 p.m. was canceled.
