SMITHTOWN, Long Island (WABC) -- A fire in Smithtown left three people seriously injured early Wednesday.
The fire broke out at the Sterling Lane home of Hauppauge Fire Department Captain Thomas Sidik just after 3:30 a.m.
Sidik's wife Kristen and the couple's two children -- a 3-year-old and a 3-month old -- suffered severe smoke inhalation. Fire officials confirm two dogs perished in the fire.
"It was the type of fire where the heavy smoke is what really produced the injuries," said Jeff Bressler, of the Smithtown Fire Department. "There was very little fire. We knocked it down very quickly."
They were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where Kristin remains in critical condition. Three firefighters were also treated for minor injuries.
It was just this past May that fire department nurse Jenn O'Brien delivered Kristen Sidik's baby on the couple's bathroom floor, and it was that same bathroom where she and her newborn were found Wednesday. And again, it was O'Brien who found them.
"Here was something really joyous, and now we come back a short three months later," Bressler said. "Jenn is obviously very emotional about this. She has an emotional attachment to his family that she'll have for the rest of her life."
Thomas Sidik also serves in the Coast Guard Reserves, and he was not home at the time, on his way back from Fort Dix when he got the call about the fire.
"When it involves your own family, I feel for him and the emotion he must have been going through with such a long drive home from New Jersey," Bressler said.
Stony Brook University Hospital and Stony Brook Children's Hospital released a statement on the behalf of the family.
"We would like to thank the community for their concerns about Kristen Sidik while she is being cared for at Stony Brook University Hospital. She remains in critical condition and is being treated by a very experienced team of doctors and nurses. Kristen's two children, whom were also affected by the incident, are being cared for at Stony Brook Children's Hospital and are in serious condition. Out of concern for Kristin and her children's well-being, we ask that you respect their privacy. We also ask to respect our family's privacy as we all focus our energy on helping them recover."
