Accident on Van Wyck Expressway leaves 1 dead, 4 injured

QUEENS (WABC) -- A man was killed early Sunday morning in an accident on the Van Wyck Expressway in Queens.

Police say he was changing a flat tire at about 4 a.m. when he was struck by a minivan heading to JFK Airport.

Three people in the minivan and one person in the victim's disabled car were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The Van Wyck Expressway leading to the airport was closed for hours following the accident.

Motorists detoured to the JFK Expressway, resulting in lengthy traffic delays.

The roadway was re-opened at about 10:45 a.m.

The victim's identity has not yet been released.
